A new PBS musical TV series aimed at preschool-age children, Meet Raggs premiered in a few select markets in the summer of 2007 and began appearing nationally in February 2008.
This DVD features three full-length episodes from TV show Meet Raggs starring the title character and his four companions, Razzles, Pido, Trilby, and B. Max. The characters are real people dressed in colorful dog costumes, though each episode features short animated segments as well. Each episode focuses on one particular topic as the characters explore a subject or attempt to solve a mystery or learn more about themselves and each other.
One episode tackles the subject of jobs: what they are, why they’re important, how different jobs enable society to function. In another episode, one character has lost her sense of smell, so her friends attempt to help by exploring the vast world of aromas. In the third episode, the gang tries to select the perfect birthday present for one of their members by examining her likes, dislikes and personality.
The different episodes each feature short mini-segments: musical breaks in which the characters perform original songs as a band in front of an audience of singing, dancing children; a cat-like character talking to children and asking questions related to that episode’s topic; and a dance segment in which the main characters teach simple dance steps which are then incorporated into routines, all to original musical accompaniment.
These separate sing-along concerts and the dance segments are featured as separate bonus features on the DVD.
Meet Raggs is a fun, upbeat, positive program, and the three episodes on this DVD are a great introduction to a show that will appeal mostly to children ages 4-10.
