The alien world of Terra is a paradise, inhabited by gentle beings who “swim” through the air and live lives focused on creating art and communing with nature. But the Terrians’ idyllic existence is cut short when their world is invaded by human beings. Seeking a new home after pollution destroyed Earth’s ecology and nuclear war wiped out most of the human race, the few remaining humans, led by the war-mongering General Hemmer, seek to conquer Terra and transform it into a copy of Earth. A young Terrian girl, Mala, rescues the human soldier Jim Stanton, and they form a friendship which transcends their differences. But can humans and Terrians learn to live in peace…and will Mala and Jim’s friendship survive when they find themselves on opposite sides in the Battle for Terra?

There is little content in Battle for Terra of concern to parents. The film contains no profanity, sexual content or troubling behavior. The film does contain a fair amount of fantasy violence; mostly, this consists of aerial battles between spaceships, but there are a few scenes showing captured Terrians (including Mala’s father) being held prisoner and medically examined. Some dead Terrian bodies are also seen in a morgue, and Terrian cities are bombed, resulting in deaths. At several points in the movie, various humans and Terrians are asphyxiated as a result of being unable to breathe one another’s air. General Hemmer deliberately asphyxiates Mala, though Jim rescues her. These scenes may frighten, sadden or confuse very young children. Some parents may also object to the movie’s ecological and anti-war themes; but overall, Battle for Terra is a fairy-tale story about the importance of understanding one another, transcending the boundaries of race and intolerance, overcoming selfishness and violence, and learning to live together in peace.

Because of its gentle, positive messages and visually beautiful entertainment value, the Parents Television Council is proud to award Battle for Terra  with the PTC Seal of ApprovalTM. The PTC recommends this movie for viewers over age ten.
