Martin's Big Words and other animated stories on this spectacular Scholastic Video Collection DVD inform children on the extensive history of Martin Luther King Jr., his fight for Civil Rights, the tradition of Kwanzaa, and other prominent African-American figures which have solidified a place in American history. The Video Collection offers a variety of information in a way that is entertaining for children, making history come alive. Most importantly, the short stories are free from any obscenities or graphic content.

Martin's Big Words, written by Doreen Rappaport and illustrated by Bryan Collier, explores Martin Luther King Jr.'s determination and perseverance in the pursuit for equality. By reading along with the text or simply viewing, children learn about the power of love: "Love is the key to all the problems of the world". King's inspirational message and his commitment to the African-American community and world are displayed in a way that celebrates his accomplishments.

There are many stories detailing the lives of African-Americans who made history. For example, John Henry tells about a man with enormous might. Written by Julius Lester and illustrated by Jerry Pinkney, this animated story serves a whopping tale of the man who could beat a machine. This story is narrated by Samuel L. Jackson and is tons of fun for tots. It shows the power of the human spirit and the importance of determination.

The collection takes a musical turn as writer Andrea Davis Pinkney and illustrator Brian Pinkney inform the viewer of the lives of Ella Fitzgerald and Duke Ellington. In Ella Fitzgerald: The Tale of the Vocal Virtuoso the viewer learns of her amazing talents and her perfection of the "b-bop" and "scat". Duke Ellington shows children that practice makes perfect; Ellington mastered the piano and formed a triumphant orchestra. It is clear that Ella Fitzgerald and Duke Ellington paved the way for other African-American musicians and vocalists.

Seven Candles for Kwanzaa, also written by Andrea Davis Pinkney and illustrated by Brian Pinkney, aids children in learning the tradition of Kwanzaa, Swahili for "first fruits of the season". From the Kinara to the Nguzo Saba, this story outlines the American tradition from start to finish.

This video collection is educational and enjoyable and perfect for all children, especially those with a budding curiosity for American History.
