PTC Presents Two Brothers Director With Seal of Approval
By Kimberly Sielen

Opens June 25

Two Brothers, a heartwarming story of two tiger cubs separated by treasure hunters who later are reunited as forced enemies, is the latest film to be awarded the Seal of Approval by the Parents Television Council.  Tim Winter, Executive Director of the PTC presented the award to director Jean-Jacques Annaud, who was greatly honored by the gesture.  The PTC was also fortunate enough to sit down with Annaud, and Guy Pearce, the star of the film, to talk about the messages contained in the movie.

The film, which centers around two young tiger cubs who are brothers, has a strong message of the bond that siblings share. Discussing the theme of family-loyalty in the film Annaud says  "as a metaphor, these young tigers and young brothers are alike.  They have the same problems in life, they face danger in life, they face predators.  One of the happiest things is to be together with the people you belong to.  On that level I feel it can be a very heartwarming message."  He also spoke of the movie's central message - that the environment is fragile, and we all need to do our part in protecting it.  "To see that all the trees in Cambodia will be gone in the next two years.  I suffer for the Cambodians, I suffer for the tigers, I suffer for myself.  We can give a little message I hope people will carry that back in their hearts and will think twice before cutting down a tree that blocks their view or killing an animal they don't like. Try to be more generous with the other creatures that live on this planet."  By making movies such as Two Brothers, filmed in Cambodia, Annaud feels he is preserving the beauty of the country for future generations.

Actor Guy Pearce says he was pleasantly surprised that the film was so family-oriented .  Having viewed the final cut only the day before, Pearce says  "unless it's blatantly obvious that it's a kids film, or a romantic comedy, when filming I imagine the film from the audience's point of view, but I don't necessarily imagine who the audiences are... This film has a far more family-oriented feel, very obvious family oriented spirit than I detected when we were making it... [There is] something really interesting about a story that kids can be interested in, that can also resonate with adult audiences or perspective; I don't know if that's the fable quality of the film.  What's interesting about this film is that it feels a bit documentary-like. The footage of the tigers feels like something you would watch in a documentary watching minutes and minutes of tiger behavior, and that psychologically has a particular effect on us opposed to how a film, a piece of entertainment might affect us... This film kind of combines a few elements which bring in a broader audience which then can relate to it."

Two Brothers is a story of the strength of family bonds.  Guy Pearce and Jean-Jacques Annaud agree that movies that contain positive messages, such as Two Brothers are especially important today, when family values face threats at every turn.  The ultimate message of Two Brothers is that families need each other to survive.  In a world such as ours, nothing is more important than family.
