Created
by a “baby’s first laugh,” the famed Disney pixie Tinker Bell is born in Pixie
Hollow in the magical world of Neverland. Administered a magical “aptitude
test,” Bell is assigned to the Tinker clan, which makes the tools other fairies
use to accomplish their tasks. But Bell thinks being a Tinker is dull, and
envies the fairies who create beauty, bring forth Spring and get to visit the
Mainland, the world of humans. Trying to be something she is not, Bell brings
disaster on Pixie Hollow. But when she learns to work with the other fairies and
accepts herself for who she is, Tinker Bell becomes one of the greatest pixies
ever.
Tinker Bell
is devoid of offensive or problematic content. The “fast-flying fairy” Vidia
thinks she is better than Tinker Bell and is mildly selfish, snobbish and
competitive. Tinker Bell at first is ashamed of her assignment as a Tinker and
calls the job “stupid,” hurting the feelings of her friends. The comically
incompetent Clank and Bobble make a few very mildly insulting remarks to one
another, including calling one another “snail brain” and saying each other
“stink.” At one point Tinker Bell is chased by fireflies, another fairy calling
out “Watch your tushie!” Some very mild fantasy-style action includes Tinker
Bell being chased by a hawk and pursued by magical “sprinting thistles,” which
scratch her rear and cause some crashes and property damage in the magical Pixie
Hollow.
The DVD offers
several charming bonuses, including deleted scenes; a “Tinker Trainer”
interactive DVD-ROM activity; “Creating Pixie Hollow,” detailing
behind-the-scenes information on how the movie was animated; a “Magical Guide to
Pixie Hollow,” which shows more details of the land of the fairies featured in
the film; “Ever Wonder,” a short live-action feature showing pixies at work in
the “real” world; and “Fly To Your Heart,” a music video by Disney Channel star
Selena Gomez.
Tinker Bell
is a delightful animated film, perfect for young children and filled with
enchanting visuals in the Disney tradition of fairies performing such magical
feats as painting ladybugs, creating rainbows and transforming winter into
spring. The story emphasizes the values of accepting oneself and being proud of
one’s talents, and working harmoniously with others for the greater good. For
parents and long-time Disney fans, the film’s final moments even offer a subtle
link to Disney’s classic film (and Tinker Bell’s debut picture) Peter Pan.
Because of its
family-friendly messages and enchanting animation, the Parents Television
Council is proud to award Disney’s Tinker Bell with the PTC Seal of
ApprovalTM. The PTC recommends this DVD for children over age
five.
