Based on the
beloved characters created by children’s book Beverly Cleary, Ramona and
Beezus tells of the difficulties caused by Ramona Quimby, age 9½.
Ramona is an unconventional child (sister Beezus calls her both “Ramona the
brave” and “Ramona the pest,” and both appellations are appropriate) whose
creativity charms, and whose rambunctiousness frustrates, her parents, teachers,
and everyone who comes into contact with her. Ramona’s parents are tolerant of
Ramona’s flights of fancy, until her father loses his job, when Ramona’s
attempts to “help” become cause for more concern. Also in the mix are romances
between Ramona’s beloved Aunt Bea and her old boyfriend Hobart, and between
sister Beezus and neighborhood boy Henry Huggins – all of whose lives are
touched by the sprightly Ramona.
Ramona and Beezus contains no violence, though Ramona’s well-meaning efforts often result
in mischievous disaster, like dumping paint on a neighbor’s car or starting a
water fight between Bea and Hobart. Ramona’s parents, Bea and Hobart, and Beezus
and Henry exchange several kisses throughout the movie. At one point, Ramona
warns everyone that she is about to say a “very dirty word” – only to bellow
“guts!” at the top of her lungs. A sick Ramona throws up at school, and (in a
scene which may disturb very young children), Ramona’s beloved pet cat dies, and
Beezus and Ramona bury him in the backyard; but neither the vomit, the death of
the pet, or the burial are explicitly shown.
Ramona and Beezus is an absolutely delightful film, one filled with joy, laughter, pathos,
and understanding, and which brilliantly captures the characters from the books.
Anyone who grew up ready Beverly Cleary’s beloved children’s classics will be
charmed by the movie, which will entertain children and amuse (and move) adults.
Ramona’s flights of fancy are well-conveyed onscreen through the use of bright
colors and surreal scenery. For its perfectly clean, appropriate, and
high-quality entertainment, the Parents Television Council is thrilled to award
Ramona and Beezus with the PTC Seal of ApprovalTM. The
PTC enthusiastically recommends this delightful film for viewers over age five.
