  American Dad on Fox

Well, it was bound to happen at some point (and frankly it’s surprising that it actually took this long), but for the first time this fall television season a Seth MacFarlane show has been named Worst TV Show of the Week.

Now that the Major League baseball playoffs and World Series have finally concluded, new episodes of The Cleveland Show, Family Guy, and American Dad have been airing; they usually constitute a semi-regular rotation of the worst stuff on TV. It just so happened that the November 14th episode of American Dad was the first to step up to the plate with blatantly offensive sexual content.

The episode centers on Stan’s restaurant-related trauma. Stan explains to his wife, Francine, that when he was a young boy, he experienced the best meal of his life -- but just as he left the restaurant and waved good-bye to the kind waiter, the restaurant exploded. The waiter’s dismembered hand landed on Stan’s balloon as he watched in horror from the parking lot. Naturally, all this is shown in graphic detail.

Francine was clearly expecting his to say something else.

“So you weren’t molested?” she asks.

“No that wasn’t until four or five years later,” Stan reminisces fondly., “It was my first week of Christian camp, but I'm not ready to talk about Father Roy. Boy, he had a set of paws on him. What a summer!”

Meanwhile, Steve – Stan’s hopelessly nerdy son - meets the new girl at school, Ashley, who promptly tells him, “I got kicked out of my old school for having too much sex.” She invites Steve to come over to her house since her mom will be out of town. But Ashley realizes that she promised to hang out with her best friend, Julia. She suggests Steve can bring a friend along to keep Julia company. She also informs Steve, “Just so know, I end up going all the way on the first date every time. Is that okay?” Of course, Steve is perfectly fine with that.

Steve brings his equally geeky friend, Snot, to Ashley’s house. As they stand in front of Ashley’s door, they talk about the forthcoming sex romp.

Snot: “So, did your girl say my girl was hot and slutty, too?”

Steve: “She didn't say, but hot sluts hang out together.”

Snot: “Excellent. I'll use the condom first.”

Apparently bringing a single condom proves to be prescient, as Ashley introduces Snot to Julia, who happens to be a toy doll. Snot threatens to leave, but Steve implores him to stay: “Okay, so Ashley is crazy as hell, but she’s good to go. You have to do this for me!”

As things quickly heat up between Ashley and Steve, Snot retreats to another room where he tosses Julia onto the bed. When Ashley goes to check on Julia, she finds Snot pulling up his zipper (after having gone to the bathroom). Ashley assumes that Snot had taken advantage of her friend:

Ashley: “She was a virgin! What’s that, Julia?” [puts her ear to the doll’s lips] “He didn’t use a condom?

Steve [feigning shock]: “You didn’t use a condom?”

Later, Stan and Francine are parked in front of where the restaurant from his childhood once stood. It is now a Catholic church. Stan assumes Fran brought him there to confront his memories about Father Roy. Stan confesses, “You want me to confront Father Roy about what happened at camp. Thing is, I’m not sure it was entirely his fault. I may have deserved it. In fact, I may have instigated it. Actually, Francine, I seduced him. I don't know why I wanted him, but I wanted him. There was no actual [bleeped] ‘f***ing.’”

The completely ludicrous sexual content on the show had absolutely no business being there. The subplot with Ashley and Julia was preposterous and labored, at best. But the jokes about molestation were offensive and disturbing, making light of a sensitive topic.

Now that MacFarlane’s shows have made it back into the schedule, it’s probably safe to assume that the triple-threat of trash will make it back into this column’s rotation fairly regularly. It’s enough to make one wonder… when does baseball season start again?

For strong sexual content, American Dad has been named Worst TV Show of the Week.
