A Charlie Brown
Thanksgiving
on ABC
By Ally Matteodo
During the week prior to Thanksgiving, what other program than A Charlie
Brown Thanksgiving could be the perfect choice for Best TV Show of the
Week? This holiday special aired on ABC on November 18th at
8:00 p.m. ET. The much-beloved Peanuts gang prepares for Thanksgiving,
beginning with Lucy cajoling Charlie Brown into kicking the football. As
always, Charlie Brown acquiesces -- only to fall flat on his face after Lucy
pulls the football away. Afterwards Peppermint Patty calls up Charlie Brown and
invites herself over for Thanksgiving Dinner. Charlie Brown is beside himself,
since he’s having dinner at his grandmother’s. Linus suggests having two
dinners, with the help of master chef Snoopy. When Peppermint Patty and her
friends arrive, Patty is severely disappointed with the dinner: toast, pretzels,
popcorn, and jellybeans! She berates Charlie Brown, but all ends happily – with
Charlie Brown, Peppermint Patty and their friends going off to grandmother’s
house for Thanksgiving dinner…while Snoopy’s doghouse provides him and Woodstock
with a full turkey dinner with all the trimmings!
While commercialism and materialism surrounds many holidays, it’s nice that this
holiday special has its heart in the right place, as the innocent and delightful
Peanuts Gang remember to give thanks. Linus calls to the gang’s attention that
the United States was the first country to create a holiday for giving thanks.
Being grateful for all the wonderful and lovely things in life can often be
overshadowed, yet that should never be the case. A Charlie Brown
Thanksgiving is a sweet treat at any age.
