Extreme Makeover: Home Edition on ABC

By Julia Ertl

Helping others and giving back by remodeling the home of a deserving family is once again the theme of the Best TV Show of the Week. On June 20th, ABC’s Extreme Makeover: Home Edition (Sundays, 8:00 p.m. ET) revolved around the adorable Hampton family of Millstone, Green County, Missouri. Nicky and her lovely husband Chris own a small house, perfect for their family of two kids, and a barn for their six horses, with they hope to expand someday.

But two years ago their life changed dramatically. Chris and Nicky’s four nephews and nieces have been removed from Nicky’s sister due to neglect. The only possible solution for Chris and Nicky, to offer them a better future without separating the siblings, was to welcome them into their home and adopt them.

At that point, the 792 square foot home – with not even 10’x10’ square for each person -- became much too small for the now huge family. Furthermore, the ceiling and roof were damaged, the wiring was from 1914, and to have enough space to be able to eat together, the family was forced to eat on the living room floor. Ty Pennington and his team of designers come to the rescue, with the aid of local builder Sam Clifton, special guest Ashley Tisdale, and the whole community of friends, family and willing helpers. Ty sends the Hamptons on holiday to Disneyland and a cruise while he and his team are constructing a completely new house, a green house and a barn with electricity, tearing down the old ones. For the Hamptons, it was more than a dream come true thanks to the generosity and aid of so many different helpers.

This family has so much heart and love to give without asking anything in return. By accepting their nieces and nephews as their own and giving them unconditional love, Chris and Nicky offer them a future they never had. This giving nature is really remarkable, since they abandon all their initial plans to give the children a better life. They don’t want their nieces and nephews to go down the path of abuse, drugs and lack of education. This state of mind should be an inspiration for everybody.

In addition, even if this eight-headed family has no space to live properly and they had some hard times, they’re not missing happiness. They enjoy themselves so much, playing around, laughing and they really don’t need much to be happy, which shows how grateful they are even for the little things in life. And especially Chris with his warmhearted personality could be seen as an inspiration for how life should be treasured and how much you receive back if you also give.

By offering the family a new home, Ty and his team, along with the community, value Chris’ and Nicky’s effort by opening the doors to a brighter future the family never ever expected. Once again, Extreme Makeover: Home Edition shows how easy and emotionally rewarding it is to change the lives of people in need by making a path forward and helping them. You’ll see, you’ll get it back.
