American Dad on Fox

Fox’s American Dad (Sundays, 9:30 p.m. ET) never shies away from exposing its audience to bizarre sexual fetishes and arcane carnal knowledge.  Past episodes have dabbled with incest, depicted a “furry” fetish, and romanticized group sex.  After the November 23^rd episode, a few more salacious items can be added to that list.   For explicit sexual content, American Dad has once again been named Worst TV Show of the Week.

When Stan’s boss at the CIA discovers that he must spend the remainder of his operating budget quickly or face cuts in the next fiscal year, the entire staff enjoys a night of debauchery at a local strip club named, “Xana Boobs”.  Stan, however, doesn’t feel comfortable.  His boss, Bullock replies, “Damn it, Smith. You think I'm not?  I'm terrified.”  Yet, he hires dancers to service him and Stan.  “Give this man your finest trouser arouser.  And you strangle me while I brush your hair.” 

While Stan receives a lap dance from a young impressionable woman, her leg starts to cramp when she tries to hoist it above Stan’s head.  “Cramp, huh?  You need to get a banana in you,” Stan suggests.

The stripper, Tanqueray, responds, “Um, I don’t do that, sir.”

Stan clarifies, “No, you need to eat a banana.  You have a potassium deficiency.” 

Stan’s suggestion works and Tanqueray agrees to be taken under Stan’s wing.  As Stan and Tanqueray leave the strip club, they pass Bullock, who is lying spread-eagle on the floor as a stripper stomps on his crotch.  Bullock moans and begs for more.  A second stripper starts punching him in the genitals.  Finally, a third stripper fires a BB-gun repeatedly at him.

Eventually, Tanqueray recruits more strippers to go straight and live at the Smith residence.  Roger begins to stream online videos from the room that the strippers share in order to torture Steve, who is away at camp.  Roger informs Steve, “Five strippers are living in your room and they're totally horny.  Melinda, Allison - go!”  The two strippers start to kiss passionately and fall backwards onto the bed.

Elsewhere, Stan’s plan to turn the strippers into proprietors of a dry cleaning business begins to falter.  To buoy the flagging business, Stan starts to strip for extra cash.  In one scene, Stan is depicted wearing a skimpy Captain America thong as he enters the backstage dressing room.  “Typical Tuesday crowd,” Stan complains, “Everybody wants to grab it, but no body wants to pay for it.  The worst part of it is I keep getting aroused.  How long before the dance boners go away?” 

“You can still get erections?” a male stripper asks.

“You’re straight?” another one wonders.

When Stan hits the stage again, his buttocks poke through the curtains.  He’s wearing a thong and chaps.  When he turns around, he recognizes that his daughter, Haley, and Roger are sitting in the front row.  Stan tries frantically to escape the club, but the damage is done.  Haley is completely traumatized.

American Dad highlights the confluence of factors that make animated shows especially worrisome for parents.  On the one hand, network censors appear to be more lax when it comes to animated sexual depictions.  On the other hand, cartoons attract younger viewers whose parents frequently assume that if a show is animated, it must be okay for kids to watch.  Parents wouldn’t let their children visit porn sites.  Yet, American Dad continually revels in smut.  For this, it rightfully deserves the title of Worst TV Show of the Week.
