Fear Itself on NBC

Making its second appearance on our list after only four episodes, the July 3rd episode of Fear Itself on NBC (10:00p.m. ET), the summer replacement show that brings slasher movie-style horror to prime time, has earned the title of Worst TV Show of The Week

In the July 3rd episode, “Eater,” cannibalistic Cajun serial killer John Mellor is locked overnight in a small-town police station, waiting to be picked up by the FBI. Guarding him is a lone female officer, Dani Bannerman, who soon becomes aware that Mellor has escaped.

Since “serial killers” have become standard grist for the C.S.I., Criminal Minds, Dexter, and Bones TV mill, the Fear Itself writers imbue Mellor with every kind of deviant psychopathic behavior from Jeffery Dahmer to Auschwitz. During flashbacks, the viewer sees Mellor torture his past female victims – peeling flesh from their skins, cutting out their tongues, then stir-frying and eating them. Afterwards, Mellor turns his victim’s skins and skulls into lampshades and ashtrays.

After the killer eats the hearts of the other police officers, he pins down Bannerman and gnaws off her right ear. She escapes his grasp for a few moments and manages to ingest rat poison before Mellor eats her heart -- insuring that, though she will die, so will Mellor. This is as close to a happy ending as this horror anthology will allow.

For showing horrifically graphic violence during prime time, Fear Itself deserves Worst TV Show of The Week.
