Fear Itself on NBC
Bringing the bloody gore and
stylized torture of recent horror films to the small screen, the June 12th
episode of Fear Itself (10:00 p.m. ET), has earned the title of
Worst TV Show of The Week.
In “Spooked,” the second episode of NBC’s horror anthology, a
dirty cop turned private investigator Harry Seigel must stake out a haunted
house that reveals “the one thing you can’t live with” to those who trespass.
From the opening scene, viewers are assaulted by Harry
brutally beating and killing a suspect in order to draw a confession. The
suspect is already covered in blood and bruises when Harry finally slashes the
suspect across the throat.
After being fired from the police force, Harry makes a living
as a private investigator who trails philandering husbands and wives. Audio
recordings of these sexual affairs, which feature grunts and moans, are played
back for the viewer’s listening enjoyment.
Inside the “haunted house,” Harry receives visions of the
traumatic childhood incident that has made him a broken adult. In a flashback to
the idyllic ‘50s, young Harry watches Howdy Doody with his brother. While
pretending to be the Lone Ranger, Harry accidentally shoots his young brother
with his policeman father’s revolver. Finding the bloody corpse, Harry’s father
makes Harry swear to “a secret pact” to bury his brother so Harry can live a
normal life.
Unlike forerunners such as HBO’s Tales from the Crypt
and Showtime’s Masters of Horror, Fear Itself moves the horror film from
premium cable to broadcast television in prime time. For its graphic depictions
of sex and violence, Fear Itself deserves the title Worst TV Show
of The Week.
