Family Guy
on Fox
In the April 27th
episode of Family Guy, “Former Life of Brian,” the walking-talking
Griffin family dog, Brian, discovers he has a 13-year-old human son named Dylan.
This revelation soon leads to the surly teenage Dylan moving in with the Griffin
family and causing general havoc. Eventually Brian bonds with Dylan over shared
marijuana smoking. Afterwards Brian becomes an attentive Dad and helps
“straighten out” Dylan before sending him home to his mother.
The show continues to push
the envelope with sexual, violent and even illegal drug content during
primetime. The Griffin family infant, Stewie, makes frequent attempts to seduce
the 13-year-old Dylan. The following exchange is heard over a baby monitor when
Dylan finds Stewie nude in his room. Stewie: ”Oh, just a little something I do
once a week around here called a naked tea party. Got my tea cup here, now all I
need is a tea bag. That's something that interests you, my friend?” Dylan:
“You're weird.” Stewie: “Yeah, and you're attractive, now take your [bleeped ‘f*cking’]
pants off.”
In a flashback, Brian is
shown to be indifferent to his girlfriend Tracy’s sexual molestation by her
father. Tracy: “And then in high school I was violated sexually by my father, it
happened on numerous occasions and I was too afraid to tell anyone because I
felt like it was my fault.” Brian: “So... you do go all the way.”
The idea of family bonding
over the shared smoking of marijuana is also played for laughs. Brian bumps into
Dylan, dislodging his bag of marijuana, which both Brian and Dylan believe
belongs to them. We cut to a smoke-filled room where a mellow Brian and Dylan
talk in parsed language, indicating they are high and finally getting along. The
shared interest leads to a father-son reconciliation and paves the way for Dylan
to turn his life around.
In another graphically
violent scene, Dylan beats an “evil monkey” to a pulp with his bare hands,
killing him. Blood is shown pooling around his body. In addition, the episode
contained numerous instances of coarse foul language.
For the graphic sexual,
violent and illegal drug content, Family Guy again deserves the title of
Worst TV Show of The Week.
