New Amsterdam on Fox

Fox’s supernatural crime drama New Amsterdam wasted no time in joining the ranks of the most offensive shows in prime-time television.  Only one week after its premiere, the March 6th episode featured graphic descriptions and depictions of a hard-core sexual fetish and a sexual relationship between a teacher and her teenage student, earning the new series the title of  Worst of the Week.

At the episode’s beginning a young man is shown bound and suffocating under a sheet of plastic.  The viewer learns that the young man is involved in auto-erotic asphyxiation, a sexual fetish in which orgasm is intensified by the restriction of oxygen.  The young man is shown dying under the plastic.  In the morgue, detectives mention that semen (perhaps from another male) was found on his leg.

The episode’s dramatic conclusion comes when a friend of the deceased sneaks photos of the 17-year-old boy engaged in inappropriate sexual contact with his teacher into the slide show at his funeral.  The married teacher is mortified and runs out of the ceremony.

Not only is this content inappropriate for 9:00 p.m. ET (only 8:00 p.m. in the Central and Mountain time zones), the concept itself poses a threat to family viewers.  Teacher-student relationships are becoming ever more prevalent in our culture.  Glamorizing them in our entertainment does nothing to help the situation and only serves to normalize these objectionable behaviors further.
