Grey’s Anatomy on ABC

Rating: TV-14

The May 1^st episode of Grey’s Anatomy entitled “Piece of My Heart” shows Dr. Meredith Grey and Dr. Derek Shepherd beginning their clinical trial on a patient with a brain tumor. This brain tumor causes the patient to act erratically and to say inappropriate and hurtful things to his wife and to the doctors who are treating him. The episode was rated PG-14 with no content descriptors despite the foul language littered throughout the episode.

This episode contains 10 instances of foul language despite its lack of an L descriptor which would have warned parents of the deluge of foul language that was to come. The word “ass” is used 5 times; “damn” is used 2 times; and “hell”, “bastard”, and “whore” are used one time each. For example, several times throughout the episode the patient suffering from a brain tumor refers to his wife as a “piece of ass” as he tries to fix her up with the male doctors. Then, in a fit of anger, he turns on Dr. Shepherd, calling him a “sick twisted bastard.”

This episode is just another in a long list of examples that show that the TV rating system is unreliable. A rating of TV-14 L would have been more appropriate considering the frequent use of foul language.
