PTC Mourns Passing of Dr. Robert Shaw

 

LOS ANGELES (March 31, 2009) – The Parents Television Council™ issued a statement in response to the news that Advisory Board Member Dr. Robert Shaw passed away last week at his home in Bolinas, CA.

 

A father of four, Dr. Shaw was a child and family psychiatrist and director of the Family Institute of Berkeley in California, which he developed with his wife, Judith Shaw, M.A.  He wrote The Epidemic: The Rot of American Culture, Absentee and Permissive Parenting, and the Resultant Plague of Joyless, Selfish Children. 

 

Dr. Shaw’s professional positions included Chief of Child Psychiatry In-patient Service and Chief of Child Psychiatry Residency Training at New York’s Mount Sinai Hospital, Director of The Coney Island Mental Health Center for Children and Youth, and Chief of the Albert Einstein College of Medicine’s Family and Children's Mental Health Services for the entire South Bronx of New York, where he trained child psychiatry residents in community psychiatry.  He joined the PTC’s Advisory Board in 2004.

 

“Bob Shaw was a man of remarkable insight, intelligence and integrity.  His work embraced the foundation of the PTC’s mission to protect children from harmful material.  While our hearts are heavy with his passing, we celebrate his life – a life dedicated to helping countless children and families.  He leaves behind a positive, lasting legacy that will continue to benefit generations to come.  Our hearts and prayers are with Judith and the entire Shaw family at this very difficult time,” said PTC President Tim Winter.

 

In The Epidemic, Dr. Shaw wrote: “Large numbers of children, even including those who could be considered privileged, are no longer developing the empathy, moral commitment, and ability to love necessary to maintain our society at the level that has always been our dream.”
