…and Will Follow Up With Teen Sex Show
Last
year, the premium cable network HBO premiered the series
Hung, about a well-endowed man who works as a male
prostitute. Now, MTV is using the same premise for a program
aimed at teenagers. The Hard Times of RJ Berger is
scripted comedy about a high-school outcast who becomes
wildly popular when he exposes his genitals to his entire
school. “Sneak peek” trailers for the show on MTV.com
include scenes of RJ’s mother
interrupting him while he is
masturbating; a teenage classmate stripping to
reveal a garter belt and stockings; RJ being seduced by an
adult neighbor; and a
false “public service announcement”
telling teens that virginity is a “serious condition,” and
suggesting that they have sex at all costs: “Together, let’s
put an end to virginity once and for all,” states the actor
in the phony PSA.
The program will be shown at
11:00 p.m. ET -- but because it premieres during summer
recess, many teens and younger children will be allowed to
stay up late. For many kids, 11:00 p.m. is no different from
9:00 p.m. if there is no school the next morning; and due to
MTV's huge popularity among teenagers, many high school and
junior high school kids will be eager to watch the series.
Furthermore, children and teens will have many opportunities
to see the program, since MTV has a pattern of rerunning its
explicit programs at all hours, sometimes even in the
morning or early afternoon.
Parents might think such content inappropriate for their
children, but MTV General Manager Stephen Friedman
disagrees: "[RJ Berger] really captures what our
audience wants...[and] speaks to where we need to go as a
network," the network head boasted in the Los Angeles
Times.
MTV is a part of the basic tier in nearly every cable and
satellite package available to consumers – meaning that,
even if the buyer never watches the channel, they are still
supporting it with their monthly payment.
It’s bad enough that “entertainment” today has devolved into
programming focused on genitalia. It’s disgusting that MTV
is aiming such a show at children. But it is OUTRAGEOUS that
everyone who subscribes to cable and satellite TV is FORCED
TO PAY FOR IT!
